The National Average Price for Regular Unleaded Gasoline is currently at $2.165 a gallon, up another 8 Tenth's of a Cent from yesterday. Six days in a row gas prices have moved up! My observation of the link between the price of Crude Oil and the price of Unleaded Gasoline has shown a loosely connected ratio between the Two. Before Katrina's affect on these Two commodities, with Crude Oil selling at $60 a barrel, Unleaded Regular Hovered around $2.60 a gallon. Now that US Refineries are getting back to pre-storm production levels, less refined gasoline is being imported to pick up the slack in the reduced US Refinery Production caused by the storm. Therefore with Light Crude Oil now selling at near $60 barrel again; (and US refineries mostly back on line) you can expect to see Unleaded Regular Gasoline to steadily move back up to $2.60 a gallon.
Now I would like to dispel the notion most people have that, "Somewhere out there is an invention, widget, gismo, or some other quick-fix thing-e-ma-bob you can buy, that will get you better gas mileage!" Not True. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has tested 100's of products that claim to get better gas mileage and found none to be cost effective in getting better gas mileage!
The fact of the matter is, when it comes to gas mileage, the order of importance is:
1. What you drive
2. How you drive
3. Where you drive
4. When you drive
What you drive (the kind of car you've bought) and the condition it's in is the ultimate factor. After that, how you drive is the most important thing in conservation and gas mileage. How you behave behind the wheel can change your gas mileage in a big way. The difference could be a realistic 35% dollar improvement between bad and good driving habits. Where you drive or the percentage between city and highway driving has to be taken into account. And, when you drive or how you pick your drive times is the last but not least factor effecting gas mileage.
